A number of factors need to be taken into account such as arbor size, backing capabilities, drag strength and method and the environment you plan of fishing. Matching a reel to a fly rod is important for balance and ease of casting and play when lading your next big fish.
Primarily, your fly reel is simply there to hold your fly line. That's it. Before you cast a fly rod, you strip line off of your reel. Most of the time this line just sits in a pile at your feet or floats in the water around your legs.
Smaller Fly Fishing Fun
Once you are fighting a fish, you have a choice: strip the line in by hand or use the fly reel. With most smaller fish, especially our BC Interior trout, you can fight and land a fish without ever using your fly reel.
Larger Fish, Lightweight Fly Fishing Setup
Once the fish get bigger you most often will rapidly reel in all your slack line and start fighting the fish off of your fly reel. If the fish is really big or if your fly rod outfit is really lightweight, the trout, bonefish, or salmon will take off and strip line and backing from your reel. This is where your drag comes in. The drag is a friction setting that makes it harder for your fly line to exit your reel. The trouble is, cheap drags stick and often your lightweight tippet will break.
