Manufacturers know your rod may be used in a number of fishing situations, but they can't judge your casting style and fishing skills. So when they place a recommended line number on your rod, it is implied that it's for average fishing conditions. First, understand that you're not going to damage a fly rod using fly line a little lighter or heavier than is recommended. Certainly, at times, the rod will fish better if different line sizes are used.

Sink Tip Lines
The sink-tip line is a combination of the floating fly line and sinking fly line. The first 10 to 30 feet is the sinking section; the balance is a floating line. It is the most common line used today for fishing nymph and streamers.

Full sink lines are rated on how fast they sink. Usually they are weight forward and the body also sinks. They range from intermediate all the way through to Type 7. Typical use is still water fishing.
